How to Write a Disney Channel Original Movie.
by CNU Editors Kristin and Danielle.
Have you ever wanted to write your own movie? Have you ever wondered what it is about those precious little Disney Channel Movies that makes them so popular? We here at Comedy Nerds United have worked day and night to create a formula that is destined for wholesome family television success. It wasn’t easy, but we believe we have cracked the code behind these cinematic gems.
- Average American Teenager has average American friends and leads an average American life
- Average American Teenager discovers something about themselves that makes them different than the rest (this includes but is not limited to a superpower, a talent, a deformity or a weird hobby. If your movie is set in a spacey/futuristic/fantasy world, then this could also include being normal by our standards)
- Average American Teenager encounters the guy/girl (hey some DCOM’s are fronted by guys! Lest we not forget Luck of the Irish!) of their dreams
- Average American teenager decides that they must hide their secret selves in order to impress new crush
- New Crush totally falls for Average American Teenager and invites Average American Teenager to go to the dance/concert/game/on a date with them
- Insert catchy musical number/flashy video montage that holds no real significance to the plot structure aside from doing typical teenage things like shopping, playing sports, dancing and putting on makeup
- At the dance/concert/game Average American Teenager’s secret is outed and he/she is shunned by his or her peers
- Average American Teenager runs out of the dance/concert/game upset and embarrassed
- New Crush is disappointed that he/she was lied to
- Insert melancholy and introspective montage typically outdoors at night (walking along the beach and sitting on swings in parks especially)
- New Crush realizes that they can’t be without Average American Teenager even if Average American Teenager isn’t so average and takes her/him back while ultimately learning something about himself in the process
- Insert closing musical number followed by first kiss
- Credits
Boom. Now just hire Cute Slightly-Ethnic Girl and Guy With the Hair and you’re set!
