Huh. I didn’t realize that until now. I (this is Danielle responding, btw) think that musical numbers are appropriate depending on the host, and so far I guess we’ve had a bunch of hosts who fared well with a musical monologue.
It made sense for Seth MacFarlane to do a musical mono since his music is one pretty important side of his personality, and obviously for Bruno Mars as well. I don’t think that it was necessary for Christina Applegate’s monologue to be a song, but I guess she just wanted a chance to show off her chops? I’m not sure.
Also, I’m not 100% sure if I would characterize Joe Gordon-Levitt’s monologue as a musical one since he didn’t sing at all (which I was completely surprised about, given his musical talent), so it’s more or less half-and-half so far this season, but yes, I do agree that at least one of the musical monologues we’ve had so far has been overkill.
